Meet Sian
Director of The Maths Movement
At the heart of The Maths Movement is a simple belief: every child can succeed in mathematics when they are taught in the right way.
The Maths Movement is led by Sian, an experienced mathematics educator and leader with over 15 years of teaching experience. Her mission is not only to improve children’s mathematical skills, but also to help them develop confidence, curiosity and enjoyment of the subject.
Sian holds a BSc in Mathematics, a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics and an MSc in Psychology, giving her a unique understanding of both mathematics and how children learn.
She currently works as Head of Maths and an EPIC Specialist for the Esteem Multi-Academy Trust, where she supports schools to improve mathematics teaching and student outcomes.
A Proven Track Record
Throughout her career, Sian has helped students from a wide range of backgrounds make exceptional progress, including:
• Students achieving up to three times expected progress in maths
• Significant improvements in GCSE outcomes
• Increased confidence and engagement with mathematics
Sian is particularly passionate about supporting children who may feel that “maths isn’t for them.” Her approach focuses on building understanding, resilience and belief in their abilities.
Research-Led Teaching
The Maths Movement is built on evidence-based teaching methods. Sian has taken part in research into teaching maths through real-world contexts, helping students develop deeper understanding and stronger problem-solving skills.
Her background in psychology also informs her teaching, supporting children to develop:
• confidence
• curiosity
• resilience
• independent thinking
Supporting Schools and Teachers
Alongside her work with students, Sian also delivers professional training to schools on reducing maths anxiety and teaching for problem solving.
Her training helps teachers create classrooms where pupils become active learners — thinking, discussing and exploring ideas rather than simply memorising procedures.
